Iwo Jima
The island of Iwo Jima is very well known in the history of the second World War II. While the eventual invasion and take over of the island is debated by many, it was turned into an unsinkable aircraft carrier upon which 7th Fighter Command would launch it’s VLR missions and where crippled B-29’s from the 20th Air Force could find safe harbor and land if they could not make it back to Tinian or Guam.
Below are original photographs, documents, newspaper clippings and more from Iwo Jima.
